CBD for Athletes: A Growing Trend?

Cannabis was once reserved for the outcasts of society - but not for much longer. There is a growing consensus amongst top athletes that CBD packs more of a pain-killing punch than any over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drug. And it’s not just anecdotal evidence - there are multiple studies that corroborate these thoughts.

So why are we seeing more top athletes switching to CBD-based products? For one, I believe CBD oil represents a more holistic solution to health and wellness. As the fitness industry shuns the myopic modern-day focus on physical appearance in favour of protecting our mental health, many trainers and sportspeople find relief for both body and mind by adding CBD to their routine.

Here at Shake CBD we work with some of the finest athletes in the North West, including Strongfirst coach Tom Simpson (@apexliverpool). Tom is an elite boxer, runner and kettlebell athlete and is active every single hour of the day, but is sometimes afflicted by bouts of shoulder pain following a recent reconstructive surgery. He has found serious pain relief by mixing 3ml of our 500mg oil in a glass of water - he told us it was even more effective than the strongest prescription painkiller he had.

If you’re someone who doesn’t like the idea of taking CBD orally, you’re not alone. Thankfully, there is a plethora of topical CBD products on the market which yield the same purported benefits  as ingestible oil. Think bath salts, patches, lotions, shampoos, creams, lip balms - almost every cosmetic in the UK is now available infused with CBD.

If you’re a runner, you may find relief rubbing some CBD balm into sore muscles and joints post-10K; if you’re a competitor, you might love the sense of calm that CBD oil can promote before competing. It’s important not to tar all CBD products with the same brush - don’t write off CBD altogether because you have had a few less than satisfactory experiences with sub-par products.
